Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are not usually the first choice, but they are sometimes necessary to maintain dental health. While the thought of having a tooth pulled may cause unease, we’re here to ensure the process is as smooth and pain-free as possible.
What are the reasons for a tooth extraction?
At NG Dental, we perform tooth extractions for several reasons:
- Irreparably damaged teeth
- Preventing overcrowding
- Removing problematic wisdom teeth
What procedures are involved in tooth extractions?
When a tooth needs to be extracted, we choose between two primary methods based on the tooth’s condition and location:
- Simple Extraction: For a tooth that is visible and easily accessible, we perform a simple extraction. This involves numbing the area with local anaesthesia and using specialised instruments to gently loosen and remove the tooth.
- Surgical Extraction: If the tooth is not easily accessible, such as a wisdom tooth that hasn’t fully erupted, a surgical extraction is necessary. This process may involve varying sedation levels, making incisions into the gum, removing the tooth in sections, and stitching the site post-extraction.
What can I expect after a tooth extraction?
Immediately after the extraction, we take steps to ensure proper healing begins. Gauze is placed over the extraction site to encourage blood clot formation, an essential part of the healing process. This clot is the foundation for new tissue to develop and fill in the gap left by the extracted tooth.
How can I ensure a smooth recovery?
Ensuring a smooth recovery involves following the aftercare instructions provided by our skilled team. This includes resting, avoiding strenuous activities, and eating soft foods. Also, it’s important to avoid smoking or drinking through a straw as these actions can disturb the blood clot and hinder healing.
