What constitutes a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health issue that requires prompt attention to relieve severe pain, stop ongoing tissue bleeding, or save a tooth. Emergencies can range from infections that risk your overall health to injuries that affect your teeth and gums.

Recognising an emergency is the first step to getting the help you need.

What are common dental emergencies?

We are equipped to handle a variety of dental emergencies, including:

  • Sudden and severe toothache
  • Partially dislodged tooth
  • Swelling in the mouth or jawline
  • Missing filling or crown
  • Broken, cracked or chipped teeth

What should I do in the case of a dental emergency?

In a dental emergency, you should contact us immediately at 068 540 3003.

We strive to see emergency cases as quickly as possible. Until you can get to our office, there are steps you can take, such as rinsing your mouth with warm water, using a cold compress for swelling, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.

Can emergency dentistry save a tooth?

Yes, in many cases, emergency dentistry can save a tooth. Treatments may include:

  • Reinsertion and stabilisation of a knocked-out tooth
  • Repair of a broken tooth
  • Addressing an infection with antibiotics followed by appropriate dental procedures

If a tooth is beyond saving, we can perform a painless extraction using local anaesthetic.

How do you treat dental emergencies?

Upon arrival at our practice, we will quickly assess your conditions. If an infection is present, we may start with a course of antibiotics to reduce inflammation and pain. Then, we’ll proceed with the appropriate treatment, such as filling a cavity, performing a root canal, or extracting the tooth if necessary.

Our priority is to relieve your pain and restore your dental health as quickly as possible.
